Amazigh jewelry
Silver, patterns and the question of who it belongs to
Among the Amazigh, jewelry was rarely just ornament: it was protection, wealth, and information about the woman wearing it.
Why silver
Gold played hardly any role. Silver counted as pure and as protective, it was more affordable, and it could be melted down and made anew: which matters for jewelry that was also a reserve. Many old pieces have therefore not survived: they were transformed whenever money was short.
The forms
Fibulae (tizerzai), used to fasten cloths at the shoulder, often in pairs and connected by a chain. Heavy bangles, anklets, headpieces, earrings that hung from the headscarf instead of the ear because they were too heavy. Along with them, amulet boxes for a piece of paper, a herb, a verse.
The signs
Diamonds, triangles, combs, eyes, the hand with five fingers. The interpretations circle around the same things: protection against the evil eye, fertility, water, boundary. The same patterns are found on carpets, on pots and in the tattoos: it is a language of forms that works across materials.
What it said
A piece could show which region a woman came from, whether she was married, how the family was doing. It was passed on from mother to daughter. It was worn at festivals, not in everyday life.
Today
Old pieces are expensive on the collectors' market, often without any statement of provenance, and not seldom sold out of households that needed the money. New pieces take up the forms, mostly lighter and for different buyers. Anyone buying something like this should ask where it comes from: that is not a wagging finger, but the difference between an object and a story.
